How it all began

The idea was first announced in 2010 by the then Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi who wanted a grand symbol to celebrate Patel’s role in bringing India together. To turn this dream into reality, a special trust called Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust was formed.

A team of historians, designers, and experts travelled across India to study existing statues of Patel. This allowed to learn more about his personality closely.

The design chosen for this project came from Indian sculptor Ram V Sutar. Once the final model was approved, a detailed 3D scan helped create the magnificent final structure we see today.

More about the Statue of Unity

The Statue of Unity stands at a height of 182 metres (597 feet). Imagining how tall this is? It is almost twice the height of the Statue of Liberty in the USA. It even rises higher than the famous Spring Temple Buddha in China which previously held the record for the world’s tallest statue.

Before this, the tallest statue in India was a 41-metre statue of Lord Hanuman in Andhra Pradesh. Today Patel’s statue proudly holds the title of not only India’s tallest but the world’s tallest.

Huge elevators inside the legs of the statue help visitors reach this point in just about 30 seconds. As you reach the gallery, a breathtaking view waits for you. You see the flowing Narmada river. Then there are the green hills and the gigantic dam spread across the land.

This statue tells the story of Patel’s honesty, power, and unity. Since its opening, the Statue of Unity has become a major global attraction. Families visit to enjoy peaceful views, students come to learn history, and travellers from all over the world arrive to admire its engineering.
